Identity Scams:
We all know about the prevalence of identity theft.  Here are some great tips courtesy of the "Time for All Ages" host Spencer Michaels (8-26-09) interviewing Edward Berberian, Jr., Marin County District Attorney, and Officer Scott Ingels of the San Rafael Police Department.
Problem:
  1. Everyone is vulnerable.
  2. Seniors and those unfamiliar with new technology are sometimes easily victimized.
  3. If someone come to your front door or telephones you regarding an allegedly broken appliance or home system such as telephone or plumbing, do not trust the identification shown. These might include badges, uniforms, clipboards containing letterhead invoices or stationery. automatically open your door or give our requested information. Hang up, don't open the door, and go call the company the person says they represent. Verify their identity, or tell them to call and make an appointment when some family member or friend will be home with you
  4. Watch for numerous small withdrawals from bank accounts
  5. Young children can be targeted, such as by divorced parents who steal identities via SSN numbers then run up bills which are not discovered until the child applies for a credit card or pays for college.
Solutions:
  1. Your best defense is education.
  2. Know the latest scams, pay attention to your bank account; report any suspicious changes to a loved one or official such as your bank officer.
  3. Banks are now required to report certain financial data if they are alerted to a potential identify theft or scam.
